Agco Power is chosen by Magnus

For any fisherman having reliable engines is imperative so when Magnus Norquay was looking to repower his fishing boat, twin Agco Power engines were chosen.

Magnus, who heads Magnus Norquay Shellfish Ltd based in the Orkney Islands, runs the 13m catamaran Samantha Jane and says the engines, from Mermaid Marine, are proving a success.

“Magnus saw the engines and bought them at the Expo show. He did some quick maths going round the show and worked out that these were a good price,” explained Davey Hourston of Hamnavoe Engineering who carried out the repower. “The engines suited his needs and the sea trials went well.

Magnus, who fishes for crab and lobster, added: “They were the right size engine and have plenty of power in them. Fuel economy seems to be good.

“I need to have reliable engines and so far these are proving very good.”

The 84CTIM engines are from the Agco Power Citius series with power to the propellers provided by Twin Disk gearboxes.

The engines are six cylinder with a four valve cylinder head and are the largest in the Citius range which all comply with the latest EU and North American emission regulations.

“The engines use the latest generation control electronics with a modern injection system and have been proven to be reliable with low operating costs and easy servicing,” said Mermaid Marine sales executive Julian Osborne.

“The Common Rail injection system allows a high injection pressure to be used and the control unit adjusts the injection pressure making sure the engine runs at its optimum for all situations.”

Cold start and cold running adjustments are controlled automatically depending on ambient and engine temperatures. Electronic engine protection functions are built into the control system. The system constantly analyses possible injector faults, rail pressure and operation in every cylinder.

Gas exchange is improved through two inlet and two exhaust valves each with their own ports allowing the fuel to mix better with air resulting in reduced emissions and improved fuel economy.

Improved gas exchange also reduces heat load in the cylinder area.

The Citius series engines are available in four and six cylinder versions from 130hp to 410hp and are designed for extreme conditions.

The 84CTIM is a 302kW (410hp) @ 2,100rpm, 8.4 litre engine.

Mermaid Marine will be exhibiting at the next Skipper Expo in Aberdeen.
